The bar with the pad is placed across thighs when you are doing pull downs, it locks in place and keeps you from being pulled off your bench when you pull down especially with heavy weights.
I wasn’t able to find any crossover attachments for this brand, the Hulkfit Power cage does have a crossover attachment sold separately and you can still use it as a squat rack, otherwise there are just crossovers but with out squat rack capabilites.
I just bench with the pegs outside the front of the rack. If you really want to bench inside the rack so you can use the safety bars, you could rack the bar on the front set up uprights and just pick it up in front of your head instead of behind your head.

They are certainly superior to the round pins that this cage comes with, though these pins are acceptable.
